Curing Heartburn-How to Cope With Heartburn During Pregnancy

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Many women suffer from heartburn during pregnancy. Old wives' tales say it means the baby has lots of hair. In reality, it mainly occurs for two reasons: the hormones released during pregnancy relax the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach which allows acids to creep up, and during the second half of pregnancy, the growing baby pushes on the stomach, pushing the acid up into the esophagus. Read on to learn some coping mechanisms for this common, uncomfortable situation.

Steps

  1. Avoid foods that are known to create heartburn. Some examples include chocolate, citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes and tomato-based products, and spicy foods.
  2. Avoid large meals. Eat several smaller meals instead.
  3. Avoid eating right before bed. A common suggestion is to stop eating about 3 hours before you plan to retire.
  4. Chew gum.
  5. Drink a glass of milk.
  6. Sleep with your head or upper body slightly elevated.
  7. Avoid bending over at the waist.
  8. Wear loose clothing and avoid anything tight around your stomach.
  9. Take an over-the-counter antacid, such as Tums, however always check that it is safe with your doctor prior before trying.
